TRUE STORY:
My love for trees runs deeply through my veins. Outside my studio today, when I saw a chopped up tree piled up on the sidewalk, I had to stop and ask the neighbor why.
He replied in a conciliatory tone that the backyard neighbors felt it was encroaching on their space. Indignant, we both took a moment to acknowledge the ridiculousness.
A few minutes later, it dawned on me that I needed some stumps in my studio, to honor and remember this tree.
I heard the giant mulcher going to work on her limbs and I sprinted downstairs to rescue some of her trunk.
Russell (as I found out is his name) understood my mission and helped me haul 2 beautiful pieces to our freight elevator and studio.
He kindly stacked them in a way I hadn't imagined and I'm respecting his creative vision by keeping them this way.
I turned and noticed on my desk, a piece of art I started as a series last year, honoring trees that are chopped down in my neighborhood. It had blown off my pinboard, having been securely fastened for a year, and was resting there as a nod to my new friend. Russell and I agreed there are no such thing as coincidences and we hugged it out.
My take away is that community is everything, trees are life and I made 2 new friends today.
